Welcome to Poznań,
the beautiful and fascinating city where history and modernity combine in a special way. As Pope John Paul II put it, “this is where Poland began”. The burg of Poznań was much favored by Mieszko I, the first duke of Poland, who erected here the country’s biggest castle in the 10th century. Poznań together with the neighboring town of Gniezno, was the first capital city of Poland. Today, Poznań is the capital and the largest city of Wielkopolska – one of the country’s essential regions. Located at Europe’s most important route, connecting Moscow, Warsaw and Berlin with Paris and London, Poznań makes the most of what geography and history have to offer.
Prepare for a wide selection of high-class historical sites representing a wide range of architectural styles. Each part of Poznań has its own, distinctive character. In order to show our guests that Poznań is an attractive tourist city, we have begun works related to the Royal and Imperial Route. Sight-seeing in Poznań will be easier with the Poznań City Card and with our tourist routes.
For several hundred years our city has been a place of coexistence of multiple nationalities. It has been inhabited by Germans, Jews, Italians, Greeks, Scots and Hungarians. Tolerance and practical approach to life, the typical traits of many generations of Poznaners, made possible the development of the unique community of Poznan Bambers. Bambers were German settlers from Bamberg who came to Poznań in the early 18th century and then voluntarily assimilated with the Polish inhabitants of Poznań, forming a homogenous and harmonious community, capable of facing whatever life threw at them.
Today’s Poznań is a vibrant city, a great location for business (with its famous Poznań International Fair), culture, and entertainment. 130 university students keep the city going, filling countless pubs, cafes and clubs every night. International festivals (Malta), gigs, happenings, museum and gallery exhibitions, theater shows, presentations, street fests (with most notable St. Martin Days) – this city goes big time! Poznań has experienced the positive consequences of the economic boom of the 1990s and now is getting ready for the next one (investments). This is a place where you can live and work well, a place offering new perspectives to all.
